One of the biggest differences between
the two films is there backgrounds and where they took place. Mel Gibson’s
Hamlet takes place in what looks like Mid Evil times. Giving the film a more
barbaric feel. Where as in Kenneth Branagh’s
Hamlet, Act 1 scene 2 takes place in more modern times, it looks like the film
was shot in a palace which a much more formal setting because it takes place
during what seems to be a wedding. This gives Kenneth Branagh’s film a much
more modern higher calss feel versus Mel Gibson’s mid evil Hamlet.

Intro
The story Hamlet has many different
film versions; each version presents its own twist and view on the original
story. The twist occurs through the eye of the director giving each film its
own style and taste. Two of the most interesting takes of Hamlet would be Mel
Gibson’s (1990) version of Hamlet and Kenneth
Branagh (1996) version of Hamlet. Although both films were produced
around roughly the same time, both films present and very different images of
Hamlet. Most of the differences occur because of the way each version was setting.
Cinematography plays a key role in each way Hamlet was presented.

My Essay Idea
The two videos that I am going to compare are Kenneth Branagh (1996) and Mel Gibson (1990). The reason I am going to compare the two is not only because they are were made around the same time. but because they are two almost entirely different interpretations. Mel Gibson's is a much more close set up what I mean is there is no audience and the scene is much more intimate making the oedipus complex way more evident. where as in the Kenneth Branagh (1996) everything is much more public and less sarcastic not as intimate but still has the oedipus complex but not as evident.

Movie Scenes
I think the one common theme that jumped out at me the most is idea and presentation of the oedipus complex. it is not something that I think is very normal. However although it is present in almost every movie version in Hamlet. From what I can tell from the play the Oedipus complex does not seem to be presented at all, making it very strange when presented in the movie and almost unnecessary.

Act 1
In act one there is a lot of setup that seems to be occurring. What I mean by that is there seems to be a lot of foreshadowing. However there are a lot of events that occur that cause some of the foreshadowing to become unclear, like the ghost. However the one thing that is very clear is that hamlet is still mourning the death of his father.

Choosing a mate
Yesterday, we discussed choosing a mate in class. We discussed how the basic rules still apply and that the process has not changed. Society has changed, we have only evolved. In todays society it is all the same all based on material. the concept has not changed only the material. The main consensus is that our ways have not changed we have only modernized the same strategies.
